In the state of Texas, the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is the government agency responsible for regulating the sale of insurance products. TDI was established in 1975 to protect consumers who purchase insurance and to ensure the financial stability of the insurance industry. The TDI has several different roles. It sets rates and standards for rate filings, licenses agents and reviews and approves applications, investigates complaints, investigates suspected violations of the Texas Insurance Code, and enforces administrative sanctions when necessary. The TDI is also responsible for overseeing the operation of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) which provides windstorm and hail insurance to policies in the 14 Texas counties most prone to severe weather. The TDI works directly with insurance companies, agents, and brokers to ensure they are following the laws and rules put in place by the state. TDI has the authority to investigate any complaint in relation to insurance companies, agents, and brokers. It also helps to inform the public about insurance regulations and provides educational materials to help people understand their rights and responsibilities when it comes to insurance.
