What is the European Union (EU)?

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union of 27 countries in Europe. It was formed in 1993 after the signing of the Maastricht Treaty, which created the EU from the European Economic Community. The EU is dedicated to providing a stable and secure economic environment for its members. The EU promotes trade and economic growth in Europe by setting common rules and policies on issues such as workers’ rights, competition, consumer protection, and the environment. The EU also helps foster international trade by eliminating trade barriers between its members and by negotiating free trade agreements with other countries. In addition, the EU has its own currency, the Euro, and its own court system to enforce EU laws. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) is responsible for keeping EU member countries in line with EU rules and regulations, including those related to international trade. International trade law in Indiana is largely influenced by the EU. The state adheres to the EU’s rules and policies on trade, and the ECJ has authority to make rulings on disputes related to international trade law. Thus, the EU plays an important role in regulating international trade in Indiana, as well as the rest of Europe.
