What are the consequences of juvenile crime?

The consequences of juvenile crime in Utah depend on the age of the offender and the severity of the crime. Minors under 18 years of age who are found guilty of a crime face juvenile court proceedings, where they may be found delinquent — a legal status between innocence and guilt — and sent to a juvenile detention center or given probation. If the juvenile’s crime is deemed to be serious, they may be subject to adult criminal penalties and could be tried as an adult in an adult criminal court. In Utah, certain violent offenses committed by a juvenile may be waived to adult criminal court, including murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. Some of the consequences that juveniles may face if found delinquent include paying fines, restitution or civil damages, engaging in community service, receiving probation or being placed in a detention center or boot camp. In addition, they may have their driver’s license suspended or revoked, face a criminal record that can affect future job and educational opportunities, attend counseling or therapy, or be subject to home detention. There are also additional consequences depending on the severity of the crime, which could include lengthy incarceration for juveniles who are tried as adults.
