What are the juvenile justice system’s response to truancy and running away?

In Utah, the juvenile justice system takes a multifaceted approach toward dealing with truancy and running away. When a juvenile runs away or skips school, the police may take that juvenile into custody and take them to a juvenile detention center. This is done in order to contact the child’s parents and ensure the safety of the child. Once the child is in the custody of the juvenile justice system, their case is reviewed. The juvenile justice system works to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and encourage the child to remain in school. Depending on the circumstances, the juvenile justice system may assign the child to a diversion program, which provides counseling, social services, or educational opportunities. If necessary, the juvenile justice system can also order the child to appear in court. In some cases, a court may order the juvenile to perform community service, such as graffiti removal, park clean-up, or other types of work. In extreme cases, the court may order the juvenile to be held in a juvenile detention center until a hearing is held. In those cases, the court may order the juvenile to attend a probation or community corrections program. Overall, Utah’s juvenile justice system strives to find the best solution for the child, while also ensuring their safety and helping them to stay in school.
