What happens if a juvenile breaks the probation or parole rules?

If a juvenile in Maine breaks the probation or parole rules, there are several possible consequences. Depending on the severity of the violation, the juvenile court judge may impose penalties that include verbal warnings, mandatory community service, home detention, or even incarceration in a juvenile detention facility. The judge may also increase the terms of probation or parole and impose additional rules and restrictions. For example, a juvenile may be required to attend counseling, attend school, or perform additional community service. In some cases, the judge may decide to waive the juvenile into adult court, which could result in criminal charges and the juvenile being tried as an adult. The penalties for this could include prison time. However, some juveniles may be eligible for a deferred disposition or deferred prosecution which allows them to avoid criminal charges but still be subject to court supervision. In addition to court-imposed penalties, if a juvenile violates the terms of their probation or parole they may also have to pay restitution to the victim or to their family if appropriate. Additionally, they may lose certain civil rights–such as the right to vote–until the terms of their probation or parole are satisfied.
