What is the difference between public and private law?

Public law is the body of law which governs the actions of public entities, such as governments, as well as the relationships between individuals and their governments. It is made up of laws such as criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law, human rights law and taxation law. Private law refers to laws that govern the rights and responsibilities of individuals, businesses and organizations with each other. It includes contracts, torts, property and family law. In Colorado, when it comes to public law, the government is responsible for making sure that laws are enforced, and for providing services such as healthcare, education, and public transportation. In addition, the government is responsible for ensuring that individual rights are protected. On the other hand, private law deals with regulations that individuals, businesses and organizations have to follow when interacting with each other. It includes laws related to contracts, torts, property and family law. In short, the main difference between public and private law is that public law governs the actions of public entities, such as governments, and private law governs the rights and responsibilities between individuals, businesses and organizations. In Colorado, individuals are expected to abide by both public law and private law in order to maintain order and security within the state.
