What is the difference between public and private international law?

Public international law consists of a set of rules and principles that govern the interactions between states, including their rights and obligations. Private international law, also known as the law of conflicts, deals with the resolution of conflicts of laws that arise between countries when their legal systems come into contact. Public international law concerns issues such as war, peace, international organizations, marine pollution, international trade, and human rights. It is derived from treaties, customs, and court decisions. Private international law, on the other hand, is concerned with private disputes between individuals where the parties have different nationalities and/or the dispute touches on the laws of two or more countries. It seeks to apply the laws of one jurisdiction to a dispute in another jurisdiction. In Maryland, public international law is a part of the overall body of US federal law. It is found in the US Constitution; in the Foreign Commerce and Relations Clause (under Article I), which gives Congress the power to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and in the Supremacy Clause (under Article VI), which declares the Constitution, and all treaties made under its authority, to be the supreme law of the land. Private international law, on the other hand, is found mainly in state statutes and common law decisions.
