What is the difference between juvenile and adult court?
Juvenile court is different from adult court in a variety of ways. The main difference is that juvenile court focuses on rehabilitation as opposed to punishment. Unlike most adult court proceedings, the focus in juvenile court is on the rehabilitation of the juvenile offender. In many cases, the offender may be offered counseling, educational, and other services in order to help them develop better decision-making skills and stay out of trouble in the future. Another key difference between juvenile and adult court is the type of sentences imposed. Adult court proceedings typically lead to incarceration, while juvenile court proceedings may lead to probation, restitution, community service, and other rehabilitative measures. Juvenile court also allows for juveniles to have their records sealed, which means that cases are not made available to the public. This helps to protect juveniles from the stigma associated with criminal convictions and gives them a second chance. Finally, juvenile court proceedings generally involve a jury comprised of members of the community, whereas adult court proceedings typically involve a judge or panel of judges. This allows more people to be involved in the decision-making process, which can help to ensure that the best interests of the juvenile are taken into consideration.
