What is the power of a juvenile court judge?
In Virginia, a juvenile court judge wields a great deal of power. These judges are responsible for handling all juvenile court cases in their jurisdiction, ranging from delinquency and status offenses to child abuse, neglect, and dependency cases. A juvenile court judge is responsible for making decisions related to whether a juvenile should be tried as an adult, determining the appropriate methods of treatment and sentencing, and ensuring each juvenile receives the appropriate level of care. The power of a juvenile court judge in Virginia is vast, and includes the ability to assess the facts of each case and determine whether it should be heard in juvenile court, the ability to decide which juvenile offenders should be transferred to adult court, and the ability to issue orders for community supervision, removal from home, and placement in residential care. In addition, the judge is ultimately responsible for creating treatment plans, deciding the best path forward for each juvenile, and determining the length of the sentence or probationary period. Ultimately, the power of a juvenile court judge is to ensure Virginia’s youth are afforded the best possible outcome, while at the same time being held accountable for their actions. The judge applies the law and decides how to best address the problems each juvenile faces and sets an example for other members of the community. It is the judge’s responsibility to ensure that justice is served and that the needs of each juvenile are met.
