What is the difference between a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility?
The difference between a juvenile detention center and a juvenile correctional facility is largely based on the type and severity of crimes committed by a juvenile. In the state of Florida, a juvenile detention center usually houses juveniles with lesser offenses such as truancy and minor property damage. Juveniles in detention centers typically stay for less than sixty days. On the other hand, juvenile correctional facilities are for juveniles with more severe offenses such as drug use and violent crimes. Juveniles sentenced to a juvenile correctional facility typically stay for up to six months or longer. The staff at a juvenile detention center provide education, counseling, and recreational activities. Whereas, staff at a juvenile correctional facility provide the same services, but also focus on behavior modification programs. In addition, juvenile correctional facilities are more likely to employ security staff and have restrictions imposed on the juvenile such as the ability to move freely and contact with visitors. In general, juvenile detention centers are much more like traditional schools, whereas juvenile correctional facilities are more like a state prison where the focus is more on punishment and rehabilitation.
