What are the rules for breaks and meal periods?

In Maryland, the rules for meal and break periods for those under age 18 are outlined in the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. According to the regulations, employers must provide unpaid meal breaks to minors of at least 30 minutes after no more than 5 hours of continuous work. The break must be taken during the work period and not before or after the work period, unless the minor and employer mutually agree to a different arrangement. Minors aged 14 and 15 are entitled to a break of at least 30 minutes for every 5 hours of work. They must be allowed to take the break no later than 4 hours after the start of work. If working more than 6 hours, they must also be given a 15-minute rest period during the work period, in addition to the meal break. For those 16 to 17 years old, employers must provide unpaid meal breaks of at least 30 minutes for every 7 hours of work. The meal period must begin no earlier than 5 hours after the start of work. All minors are prohibited from working more than 8 hours in a 24-hour period. Minors under age 16 are prohibited from working more than 6 consecutive days and all minors are prohibited from working after 10 p.m. the night before a scheduled school day. Employers must also ensure that minors are given appropriate eating and rest periods according to the labor laws in Maryland. This is important to ensure that all minors remain safe while working and to ensure that minors receive adequate rest in between work shifts.
