How much alcohol can a person legally consume in a single sitting?
In Washington, it is illegal for a person to drink or possess alcohol if they are under the legal drinking age of 21. Furthermore, it is illegal to provide alcohol to a minor. Under Washington Liquor Liability Law, no person 21 or older can legally consume more than one standard alcoholic drink in a single sitting. The amount of alcohol in a single standard drink is typically 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor. Even though the law states that a person cannot have more than one single drink in a sitting, this does not mean that a person can stop drinking after having a single drink and be okay to drive. A person’s blood alcohol level can continue to rise even after the effects of the first drink start to wear off. In addition, drinking alcohol quickly or having drinks with a higher alcohol content can also increase the effects of the alcohol and can result in a person having a higher blood alcohol level. In Washington, it is illegal for any person to drive while under the influence of alcohol. Even if a person has consumed only one standard drink, they can still be charged with a DUI if they are impaired by the alcohol. Therefore, it is important to make sure that you are monitor your consumption of alcohol and do not drive after drinking, regardless of how much you have consumed.
