What should I do if I am served alcohol when I am under the legal drinking age?
If you are served alcohol while under the legal drinking age in California, you should always refuse the drink and leave the area immediately. It is illegal in the state of California for someone under the age of 21 to consume or possess alcohol. Anybody who sells, serves, or furnishes alcohol to someone under 21 can face civil and/or criminal penalties, depending on the circumstances. If you are under the legal drinking age and are served alcohol, you should also do your best to get out of the situation without causing a scene. Simply tell the server that you do not want the drink and then leave the area as soon as possible. Once you are away from the area, be sure to report the incident to the police or your local liquor enforcement agency. You should provide as much information as possible, including the name of the establishment and the name of the person who served you the alcohol. Liquor liability laws are in place to protect both adults and minors. It is important to always follow these laws and to never consume or possess alcohol when you are underage. If you report any violations of these laws, you can help protect other minors from being served alcohol illegally.
