How much notice does a tenant typically have to give before terminating a rental agreement?

In California, a tenant typically has to give at least 30 days’ notice before terminating a rental agreement. If the tenant has rented on a month to month basis, they must provide 30 days’ written notice. If the tenant has rented on a week to week basis, they must provide 7 days’ written notice. In some cases, the tenant may have to give more than 30 days’ notice if the lease specifies a longer notice period. The tenant must also provide the landlord with the contact information of their new address if they plan to move out of the rental unit. It is important to note that the tenant cannot move out until the agreed-upon termination date set in the written notice. If the tenant moves out of the unit without giving proper notice, the landlord can take legal action to recover any unpaid rent or damages. Finally, the tenant must also make sure to return the keys to the rental unit on the date indicated in the written notice. If the tenant fails to do so, the landlord can deduct the cost of replacing the keys from the tenant’s security deposit.
