What are the legal requirements to get married?
In the state of Washington, couples must meet the legal requirements to get married. To be legally married in the state, couples must obtain a marriage license from the county auditor’s office in their county. The marriage license application must be completed in the presence of the county auditor or a notary public. Both parties must bring valid photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport, to prove their identity. There is also a three-day waiting period after the application is submitted before the marriage license is issued. Both parties must be 18 years of age or older to apply for a marriage license in Washington without parental consent. If one or both parties are 16 or 17 years old, they must provide written permission from both parents, or a parent or guardian if one parent is deceased. If one or both parties are 15 years old, they must have a court order from a prosecuting attorney granting permission to apply for a marriage license. Washington also has a mandatory blood test requirement for marriage licenses. Both parties must have a blood test for Rubella, which is a form of the measles, within six months of the wedding date.
