What is the process for applying for a marriage license?

In Washington State, the process for applying for a marriage license is relatively straightforward. First, both parties must appear together at the county auditor’s office to fill out the application. Both parties must bring valid picture identification and have their full name, date of birth, address, and social security number. Either party may bring witnesses, such as family or friends. The application requires both parties to list all former marriages or divorces. If either party has been married before, some extra paperwork may be required. Both parties must also fill out a Certificate of Marriage Intent, a form that requires both parties to sign and declare that they understand that marriage is a legal contract. Once the application is completed, it must be signed by both parties in the presence of the county auditor. At this point, the applicants must pay the fee for the marriage license. The current fee in Washington State is $64. The license must then be signed by a qualified officiant and returned to the county auditor to be recorded and filed in the public records. If all the paperwork is completed correctly, the marriage license will be valid for sixty days.
