What documents do I need to get married?

In the state of Washington, couples who wish to get married must first obtain a marriage license. To obtain a marriage license you must bring a government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport. If either partner was previously married, they must provide legal proof of any divorce or death of a prior spouse in order to legally remarry. Couples must also pay the state’s marriage license fee. Both partners must be present in order to obtain the license. Additionally, if either partner is under the age of 18, parental consent must be provided. Once the marriage license is obtained, there are several ways couples can legally get married. In Washington, couples can have a civil ceremony conducted by a judge or court-designated representative such as a county auditor. Couples can also have a religious ceremony officiated by a religious leader. Additionally, couples may also have a friend or family member perform their ceremony if they apply for and receive a one-time marriage commissioner designation. Whichever type of ceremony is chosen, both partners must sign the marriage license in front of two witnesses. After the wedding ceremony, the officiant must sign and submit the license to the county auditor’s office in order for it to be legally recognized.
