What is the process for filing for a marriage license in my state?

The process for filing for a marriage license in Washington is relatively straightforward. First, you and your intended spouse must both appear in person at a county or city hall office in Washington State to apply for the license. You will need to bring valid picture identification such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport. Also make sure to bring your Social Security numbers as well as the full names and birthdates of each of your parents. The clerk may ask other questions as well. Once the application is filled out and accepted, you will have to wait 3 days before the license is issued. This waiting period is required by the state and can not be waived. After the 3 days, the couple can come back to the office to pick up their marriage license. The license will be valid for 60 days, beginning on the date of issuance. If either the bride or groom are under 18 years of age, you will need written parental consent. A judge of a superior court may also provide consent in certain circumstances. In this case, a minor must provide a copy of their birth certificate to the court. Additionally, couples must be of legal age, and blood tests are also not required. In Washington, couples are allowed to waive the three-day waiting period with a court order. Couples should contact the appropriate county court for more information on how to obtain this order. The appropriate marriage license fees must be paid at the time of application for the license. The fee is payable by cash, check, or money order, and may vary by county.
