What are the laws regarding marriage in my state?

In California, the laws regarding marriage are outlined in the California Family Code. According to the law, only two consenting adults, of the opposite or same gender, are permitted to marry. Both parties must be 18 years of age or older and neither party can be married to someone else. If a party is under 18, they must have parental and court consent. Additionally, the couple must obtain a valid marriage license before the ceremony. In California, valid marriage licenses are issued by county clerks. The couple must also have a qualified individual, such as a minister, religious leader, judge, commissioner, or deputy commissioner, to perform the marriage ceremony. All of these requirements must be fulfilled in order to be lawfully married in California. Finally, California also offers the option of a domestic partnership, which is a legal relationship between two unmarried individuals. To be eligible, both parties must be 18 years of age or older, of the same gender, and not currently married or in a domestic partnership. Additionally, they must share a close personal relationship and live together in California. Domestic partners are afforded many of the same rights and responsibilities as a legally married couple, including eligibility for healthcare and hospital visitation.
