What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is a form of treatment that utilizes the cannabis plant, or its active compounds, to help alleviate symptoms of certain medical conditions. In California, the use of medical marijuana is regulated by the state’s Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA). This Act defines medical marijuana as “all parts of the cannabis plant, whether growing or not; the seeds thereof; the resin extracted from any part of the cannabis plant; and every compound, manufacture, salt, derivative, mixture, or preparation of the cannabis plant, its seeds or resin.” Medical marijuana can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions including pain, nausea, seizures, and muscle spasms. The cannabis plant contains various compounds, also known as cannabinoids, which have medical benefits. The primary cannabinoid is THC, which is responsible for many of the medical benefits associated with medical marijuana. Other cannabinoids, such as Cannabidiol (CBD), have also been used to treat various medical conditions. In California, patients seeking to use medical marijuana must obtain a doctor’s recommendation as well as obtain a state-issued identification card. Patients must be at least 18 years old and must also be diagnosed with a “qualifying medical condition” such as cancer, epilepsy, or AIDS. Patients can then purchase medical marijuana at a state-licensed dispensary. The dispensaries are required to follow state regulations, including testing their products to make sure they meet safety requirements.
