What conditions qualify for medical marijuana?

In California, the laws governing the use of medical marijuana are quite specific. A person must have a recommendation from a licensed physician to legally purchase and possess marijuana for medicinal purposes. The physician must have examined the patient and determined that he or she suffers from a serious medical condition that could potentially be relieved by the use of marijuana. The conditions that are medically eligible for marijuana treatment vary from state to state. In California, the list of qualifying conditions includes cancer, anorexia, AIDS, chronic pain, spasticity, glaucoma, arthritis, migraine, or any other illness for which marijuana provides relief. In addition to the above conditions, certain chronic or debilitating diseases can qualify a person for legal access to medical marijuana. These include Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, muscular dystrophy, cachexia, Wasting Syndrome, PTSD, and severe nausea. Patients with any of the above conditions can legally purchase marijuana from a state-licensed dispensary once they obtain a written recommendation from a physician. Finally, it’s important to note that California law also allows people who are not diagnosed with any of the qualifying medical conditions to use marijuana for therapeutic purposes. This is known as “compassionate use,” and it requires that the patient’s physician believes that marijuana’s therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. In California, patients with a valid doctor’s recommendation are allowed to legally possess up to eight ounces of marijuana flower or up to six mature plants for medicinal use.
