Yes, there are restrictions on the sale of medical marijuana in Washington State. The State Legislature requires people to register with the Department of Health in order to get a recommendation from a naturopathic doctor for medical marijuana. The doctor must determine that the patient has a qualifying medical condition and that the use of medical marijuana could benefit them. Once registered, patients must obtain their medical marijuana from an approved retail outlet. These retailers must be certified by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board and must also comply with any other state or local restrictions. Furthermore, they cannot sell more than one ounce of marijuana in one transaction or any amount of marijuana in forms that can be easily ingested, such as edibles or drinks. Selling medical marijuana to a person who is not a registered patient is prohibited. Driving under the influence of marijuana, even if it is for medical purposes, is also illegal. Retailers must also not sell any marijuana that has been grown or processed in any way outside of a facility licensed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
