Can medical marijuana be prescribed for pets?

In California, medical marijuana is an approved form of treatment under state law. However, at this time, the law does not specifically allow for the prescribing of medical marijuana for pets. The law states that California residents who have obtained a doctor’s recommendation or a Medical Marijuana Identification Card may consume and possess marijuana with a medical marijuana recommendation from a doctor. Under the law, medical marijuana can only be used to treat specific medical conditions. This means that while medical marijuana can be prescribed for humans, it cannot be prescribed for pets. While there is evidence to suggest that medical marijuana can alleviate pain and symptoms for animals, there is currently not enough scientific research to support the prescription of medical marijuana for animals in California. Drugs that have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, such as certain prescription medications, can be prescribed to animals. However, as medical marijuana has not been approved for use in animals, veterinarians cannot prescribe or recommend it. While the law in California does not currently allow for the use of medical marijuana for animals, the situation may change in the future. As the legal landscape around medical marijuana continues to evolve, it is possible that the law may be amended to permit the prescribing of medical marijuana to animals. Until then, medical marijuana remains off-limits for use on pets in California.
