What is copyright?

Copyright is a legal concept that provides exclusive rights to authors and creators for a certain period of time. This means that the creator or author of an original work has an exclusive right to use, reproduce, or modify their own work. In Texas, this includes laws that protect books, songs, movies, video recordings, photographs, and artwork. Copyright protection is important because it provides protection for the creators of original works, giving them control and ownership of their creations. This protection prevents others from taking credit for, or benefiting from, the original work of an author or creator. Without copyright protection, anyone could take the ideas of another person and use them as their own. When copyright infringement occurs, the affected party can take legal action against the infringing party. In some cases, the infringing party may be liable for damages or even criminal prosecution. Copyright laws in Texas also provide protection for inventions, designs, symbols, logos, and computer programs. Even after the author or creator passes away, their works are still under copyright protection for a period of 70 years or more.
