What are the restrictions on broadcast media ownership?
In Florida, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sets the rules for broadcast media ownership. All broadcast media ownership restrictions are ultimately based on FCC regulations and laws. Broadcast media ownership rules in Florida are mainly focused on concentration of media ownership, diversity of voices, and the maintenance of an open marketplace for ideas. In order to ensure diversity of voices and the presence of an open marketplace for ideas, the FCC has put in place a variety of regulations. In Florida, the FCC places restrictions on the ownership of radio and television stations. The FCC does not allow one entity to own more than eight radio and television stations in any market in the United States; also, it does not permit an entity to own more than five television stations in any market. Additionally, the FCC does not allow an entity to own two television stations that both broadcast from the same area. The FCC also places restrictions on when an entity can own more than one station in a single market. Specifically, an entity cannot own two or more television stations in a single area if those stations would reach more than 39 percent of the total population of the area. In addition to these restrictions on broadcast media ownership, the FCC also maintains other regulations, such as rules about duopoly and the number of channels a broadcaster can air on any given station. These rules are intended to ensure diversity of voices and an open marketplace for ideas.
