How does the military handle cases involving drug misuse?

The military takes drug misuse very seriously and handles all cases with a zero-tolerance policy. In Maine, any service member found guilty of drug misuse, including possessing, using, distributing, or selling illegal drugs are subject to a court-martial, which is the military court. A court-martial may give out punishments such as a reduction in rank, a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and up to two years in confinement. During the investigation, the service member may be administratively separated, which means they will be separated from the military without facing any criminal charges. If the service member is found guilty, the court-martial will decide on an appropriate punishment depending on the severity of the crime. Punishments can range from a warning or reprimand to a reduction in rank, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, or a dishonorable discharge from the military. In addition, service members who are found guilty of drug misuse may also be required to attend counseling or rehabilitation programs. These programs are designed to help the service member understand the dangers of drug misuse, as well as help them develop skills to resist drugs in the future. Regardless of the severity of the crime, service members can expect to face some form of punishment that may include a reduction in rank, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and possible confinement.
