How is evidence presented in a court-martial?

In Tennessee, evidence presented in a court-martial is generally handled in much the same way as evidence in civilian courts, with a few exceptions. Evidence can be presented in the form of physical objects, testimony, and documents. Physical objects, such as a weapon or item of clothing, can be shown to the court-martial panel to demonstrate facts related to the case. Testimony can be given by witnesses and people involved in the case, including the accused and members of the military. Documents, such as records of prior court-martial proceedings or statements written by witnesses, can also be entered as evidence. Evidence may also be presented in other forms, such as photographs, audio recordings, and video recordings. In addition, some types of evidence, such as documents and photographs, may be presented as hearsay evidence. Hearsay evidence is evidence that was created by someone other than the witness and is presented in court to prove facts about the case. To ensure that all evidence presented in a court-martial is reliable and relevant, the accused has the right to challenge the evidence presented by the prosecution. The accused can also present evidence on their own behalf as part of the defense. The court-martial panel will then evaluate all of the evidence presented on both sides and make a ruling on the case.
