What is maritime law?

Maritime Law is a type of law that deals with the governing of navigation, shipping, transport, and commerce on the seas and oceans. It is also known as admiralty law. Maritime Law is different from ordinary law in that it applies to maritime vessels, the activities of those vessels, and the people who work on and around them. In the state of New York, Maritime Law is used to resolve maritime-related disputes, such as those concerning ships, their construction, operation, cargo, passengers, accidents, pollution, salvage, and towage. Maritime Law extends to the various ports around New York, as these are integral parts of the state’s booming shipping industry. Maritime Law is also used to protect maritime workers, vessel owners, and other organizations engaged in activities connected to the sea. This includes defining the rights of maritime workers, setting safety standards, determining how damages will be paid, and determining who is responsible for damages. Furthermore, Maritime Law applies to a wide range of activities, including maritime contracts between parties, shipping disputes, recreational boating, and even maritime insurance. Thus, Maritime Law is an essential aspect of the law in New York and in many other ports and cities around the world.
