What is maritime law?
Maritime law, also known as admiralty law, refers to the body of laws that govern ships, vessels, and the operations of the sea. In Texas, maritime law is mostly contained within the U.S. Code and the Code of Federal Regulations, as well as certain Texas laws that specifically relate to maritime issues. Maritime law covers a wide range of topics, from the licensing of ships and ship owners to the rules of navigation and navigation safety. Maritime law also governs maritime contracts, crew compensation, cargo claims, and vessel collisions. Additionally, maritime law is an important component of environmental law, as it serves to protect the resources of the seas and outlines rules and regulations to maintain the safety of the environment. Maritime law is a specialized field of law that requires specialized knowledge and experience to effectively practice, which is why Texas has a specialized Maritime Law Association to aid attorneys and other professionals working in this area.
