What does maritime law cover?
Maritime law, also known as admiralty law, is a body of law that governs the relationships between people and organizations using the ocean for transportation and commerce. In Florida, this law covers a wide range of activities, from the movement of goods on ships to the operation of offshore drilling rigs. It also covers issues such as worker safety and protection of the environment. Maritime law also covers the rights and obligations of vessel owners, ship captains, merchants, and insurers. Vessel owners must ensure the safety of their vessels and crews, while merchants must fulfill their contracts for goods or services. Maritime law also covers actions such as collisions, sinkings, rescues, collisions between vessels, navigation of vessels, arrests or detentions of vessels, and the transfer of goods from one vessel to another. Additionally, it covers damage caused by marine hazards such as storms, fog, and pirates as well as actions taken to prevent and mitigate losses from such hazards. Vessels in the process of being built can also be covered by maritime law. In terms of the legal process, maritime law is primarily found in the rules set forth in the Federal Rules of Civil procedure, as opposed to state laws or common law.
