What is the relationship between maritime law and international law?

Maritime law is an area of law that governs interactions between people and businesses on or near bodies of water such as oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes. International law is an area of law that governs international relations between countries. While maritime law and international law both have to do with aspects of the international waters, they come from different perspectives. International law is mainly concerned with the relationships between nations and the regulation of their activities on the international scale. This includes such matters as treaties, trade agreements, trade law, conflict resolution, diplomacy, and environmental protection. Maritime law, on the other hand, applies specifically to matters concerning navigation, shipping, and related activities. This includes such matters as the rights of shipowners, marine insurance, salvage, collisions, and other marine related activities. The relationship between maritime law and international law is that while both areas of law govern activities on international waters, maritime law is more concerned with activities taking place on those waters while international law is more concerned with the relationships between countries. For example, if a dispute arises between two ships on international waters, the matter would be addressed under maritime law. If, however, the dispute is between two countries, the matter would be addressed under international law. In Florida, maritime law is governed by both Florida state law and federal law. As such, these two laws interact with each other in a way that is unique to the state. In addition, while much of maritime law is determined by international conventions and treaties, they are usually only enforced in Florida when they have been adopted as state law. As such, the relationship between maritime law and international law is complicated, but important for understanding how the two interact in Florida.
