What is the law of the sea?

The law of the sea is a set of international laws that govern activities conducted in maritime waters. This set of laws is applied to the ocean territory that lies beyond the recognized boundaries of sovereign coastal states. This law also applies to navigation, fisheries, the exploitation of offshore resources, environmental protection, and deep seabed mining. In South Carolina, all laws concerning the sea are regulated by an agency within the state government called the Department of Natural Resources. This agency is responsible for ensuring that South Carolina’s coastal and marine waters are responsibly managed. This includes enforcing the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Marine Pollution Conventions. Both the US Coast Guard and the US Navy are responsible for the enforcement of maritime laws in South Carolina. This includes protecting the safety of those that operate on the water from collisions, piracy, and violations of any international laws. The Coast Guard also works to protect the environment from maritime pollution. The US Navy is in charge of international security and its role in the law of the sea. This includes regulating the use of maritime navigation, protecting ships from piracy, and enforcing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Navy also works closely with the US Coast Guard to provide assistance in any maritime-related crisis. In addition, the United Nations has established a system of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations which are responsible for managing resources in the areas of fishing, aquaculture, and living marine resources. These organizations work with the coastal states in South Carolina to ensure these resources are protected and used in a sustainable manner.
