What international conventions are related to persons with disabilities?

International conventions related to persons with disabilities are important in Maritime Law in South Carolina, as well as globally. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is the most widely adopted international law aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. This convention was adopted in 2006 and entered into force in 2008. It is the first legally binding document that recognizes the rights of persons with disabilities and outlines the states’ obligations to guarantee those rights. The International Labor Organization (ILO) also has several conventions and regulations related to disabilities, such as the Convention on Employment and Occupational Training of Disabled Persons, which calls on governments to ensure the viability of employment and occupational training opportunities for disabled persons. The ILO also has the Equality and Non-Discrimination Convention, which requires employers to ensure the equal treatment of all persons with disabilities in terms of access to work and protection from discrimination. These conventions are meant to ensure the safety and protection of persons with disabilities within the Maritime industry and also provide guidance to states about how to ensure their full contributions and social protections in the workplace.
