What is the scope of the International Convention for the Protection of Natural Resources and the Environment in the South Pacific Region?
The International Convention for the Protection of Natural Resources and the Environment in the South Pacific Region, otherwise known as the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Convention, is the main international agreement guiding and governing the protection of the environment and natural resources in the South Pacific Region. This region includes the various small islands states, dependencies, and territories scattered across the South Pacific Ocean. The scope of the SPREP Convention is quite wide, including the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, conservation of biological diversity, the prevention of land degradation, management of hazardous waste, and protection of soil resources. It also includes measures for the wise use of natural resources, such as fisheries, coral reefs, and mangroves, as well as the promotion of sustainable development. The SPREP Convention has been implemented in many different ways in the South Pacific Region, such as through the identification of marine and terrestrial protected areas, the strengthening of regional regulatory frameworks, management strategies for the sustainable use of natural resources, and the establishment of waste management systems. In Louisiana, the Marine Resources Division of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for implementing the SPREP Convention and managing the marine environment and resources of Louisiana.
