What are the criteria for registering to vote in a municipal election?

In West Virginia, the criteria for registering to vote in a municipal election are the same as the criteria to vote in a statewide election. You must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of West Virginia and the county where you vote, and have not been convicted of a felony or judged mentally incompetent by a court. In addition, you must have been a resident of the municipality where you are voting in for at least 30 days prior to the election. In order to register, you must fill out a Voter Registration Application and provide a valid West Virginia ID or driver’s license, as well as a Social Security number or other approved form of identification. The DMV Website and some county clerks offices have a voter registration form you can download or fill out online. To be eligible to vote in a municipal election, you must be registered to vote no later than 5 pm on the Saturday before the election. If you have moved since you last voted, you must also update your voter registration address with either the DMV Website or the county clerk’s office. Keep in mind that some West Virginia municipalities may have different rules or deadlines for voter registration. Check with your local election officials for information specific to your local municipality.
