What is the Native American Rights Fund?
The Native American Rights Fund (NARF) is a non-profit organization that works to protect and advance the rights of Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous peoples in the United States. NARF works through legislation, litigation, and public education to ensure that the rights of Native Americans are upheld in the United States. NARF was founded in 1970 with the purpose of protecting the rights of Native American tribes and promoting the development of tribal sovereignty. Since then, NARF has achieved many important wins in Native American law cases. For example, in 1981 NARF successfully argued a case before the Supreme Court of the United States, ruling that the Arkansas River Compact, a water-sharing agreement between Oklahoma and Arkansas, should be amended to recognize the rights of the Quapaw Tribe in Oklahoma. This provided the Quapaw with an additional 1.5 million acre-feet of water each year. NARF also works to support Native American tribes in exercising their sovereignty in other ways. For example, in South Carolina NARF has worked with the Cherokee Nation to assist them in developing and managing their own tribal court system, as well as helping to protect their cultural and religious rights. NARF works to fight injustice against Native Americans throughout the United States, and their work is crucial for protecting the rights of all Native Americans. Through public education and legal work, NARF helps to both protect and advance the rights of Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous peoples.
