What is the Indian Health Care Improvement Act?
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) is a US law that provides health care services to Native American and Alaska Native individuals. It was enacted in 1976 and was most recently reauthorized in 2010. The purpose of the IHCIA is to improve the health status of Native Americans and to promote access to quality health care services. It addresses health conditions that disproportionately affect the Native American population, such as diabetes, obesity, and mental health issues. In Florida, the IHCIA affects Native American and Alaska Native individuals who are enrolled in the Indian Health Service or receiving services through a Tribal health program. Under this law, the Indian Health Service is responsible for providing health care services to Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The law includes provisions for improving health care access, increasing the quality of health care, and providing resources for health care facilities on Indian reservations. The IHCIA also provides for funding to support health promotion, disease prevention, and health education for Native Americans and Alaska Native individuals. This funding provides for the development of programs that create culturally sensitive health promotion programs for Native Americans and Alaska Natives. These programs focus on improving access to health care in the community and increasing awareness about health-related issues. In addition, the IHCIA provides grants for health research projects that are focused on Native American and Alaska Native health issues. These grants support research that helps to improve health care outcomes for Native American and Alaska Native communities. This grants program helps to ensure that health care services in Florida are provided with Native American and Alaska Native cultural sensitivity.
