What is the Indian Education Assistance Act?
The Indian Education Assistance Act (IEAA) is a law that was passed in Washington in order to encourage educational opportunities for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The law states that the Department of Education must provide financial assistance to American Indian and Alaska Native students who are attending public schools within the state of Washington. This assistance is intended to help improve academic achievement and increase the success rate of American Indian and Alaska Native students in their academic careers. The IEAA requires schools to create a program that recognizes the distinct cultural backgrounds of American Indian and Alaska Native students and to provide educational opportunities that are tailored to their needs. The law also provides funding for Native American language and culture programs, as well as for Native American-oriented extracurricular activities. The IEAA is an important law as it is helping to ensure that American Indian and Alaska Native students have access to equitable educational opportunities. Additionally, it is playing an important role in preserving Native American culture and language in the Washington public school system.
