What is the Indian Health Care Improvement Act?
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) is a federal law passed by Congress in 1976 to provide health care services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. Since its enactment, the IHCIA has been amended several times in order to ensure that Native American people receive adequate health care services. The IHCIA is designed to expand and improve the delivery of health care services by creating better access to health care resources for Native American communities. It does this in a variety of ways, including increasing the number of Indian Health Service (IHS) health care providers, improving IHS-run health care centers, and providing access to health care insurance coverage through Tribal-specific programs. The IHCIA also provides funding for Native American health care programs and initiatives. This funding is allocated to various tribal organizations and non-governmental organizations, which use the money to support programs such as preventative care, community health initiatives, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, and more. In addition, the IHCIA also provides funding to IHS-run health care centers, which are located on tribal lands. These centers provide medical care, health screenings, and other health services to Native Americans living on tribal lands. The IHCIA is an important law that helps provide Native Americans with the health care services they need and deserve. By providing resources, funding, and access to health care coverage, the IHCIA is helping to improve the health and well-being of Native American communities throughout the country.
