What is the Indian Health Care Improvement Act?
The Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) is a law that was first passed in 1976 by Congress in order to improve the health care of Native Americans in the United States. The IHCIA is designed to be a comprehensive approach to addressing the health care needs of Native American Tribes, by allowing them to receive funding and services for health care through the Indian Health Service (IHS). The IHCIA requires that the Federal government provide certain health services to all Native Americans, which include medical, dental, and mental health care, as well as preventive care. These services are designed to ensure that Native Americans have access to the best possible health care, and to help reduce disparities in health care access and outcomes. Additionally, the IHCIA provides Indian Tribes with the resources to create and sustain health care programs that meet the unique health needs of their communities. The IHCIA also requires that all health care and services provided to Native Americans be culturally appropriate and in accordance with traditional Native American healing practices. This ensures that Native Americans have access to culturally sensitive health care, and contributes to its effectiveness in improving Native American health outcomes. In New York, the IHCIA has been implemented in various ways, including through the development of Native American health care programs, and the establishment of organizations to help promote the wellbeing of Native Americans. Additionally, the IHCIA has been used to fund and support Native American health programs in New York, and to provide health care services to Native American communities in the state.
