What is the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act?

The Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act (IETRSA) is a piece of legislation that was enacted by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1999. This Act is designed to bring together the resources of the State and the Federally Recognized Tribes in order to support and promote economic development, job creation, and skill development among Native Americans in South Carolina. The Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act provides financial assistance and resources to the State’s federally recognized Indian Tribes in order to help them create jobs, build skills, and increase business opportunities in their communities. The Act also sets out criteria for the selection of projects and the use of funds. The Act covers a variety of services, including job training, labor recruitment, placement, and retention services; vocational education; training in entrepreneurial development; funding of job training projects; financial services for the development of businesses, housing, and energy and natural resource programs; and other services related to employment or training for Native Americans. By creating the Indian Employment, Training and Related Services Act, the General Assembly seeks to foster economic development and create better job opportunities for Native Americans in the State of South Carolina. This Act has enabled Native Americans to have better control over their lives, communities, and economy, as well as to access resources and opportunities that were once out of reach.
