What is the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act?

The Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) is a federal law that was enacted in 1975 to foster self-determination and increased educational opportunities for Native Americans. The law was designed to provide financial and administrative support to tribes, to strengthen their governments, and to help them provide social services and education to their members. In North Carolina, ISDEAA is designed to give tribes greater autonomy and control over their own affairs. Under the Act, tribal governments are authorized to provide government services to their members and to assume responsibility for certain programs that are usually provided by the federal or state governments. For example, tribes in North Carolina can now develop, manage, and administer their own educational, health, and social service activities, excluding those that are regulated by the state. ISDEAA has been a great success in North Carolina. It has enabled many of the tribes in the state to become more self-sufficient, while providing them access to federal funds to help meet their own goals. By utilizing the financial support of the Act, tribes have been able to develop programs and initiatives that are tailored to their unique needs. This has led to increased job opportunities, improved educational outcomes, and greater economic development.
