What is the Indian Education Act?
The Indian Education Act is a law enacted by the state of New Jersey that encourages American Indian students to pursue higher education. It also provides additional resources and services to those students in order to help them succeed in college. The Indian Education Act was signed into law in 1990 by Governor Jim Florio. The act is designed to provide American Indian students with supplemental services, such as cultural enrichment programs, counseling, and other assistance that will help them succeed in school and prepare for college. It also creates a special education advisory council that provides guidance and resources to American Indian students and their families. The Indian Education Act also calls for increased outreach and recruitment programs to attract Native American students into higher education institutions. It requires that all state universities and colleges actively recruit Native American students, as well as provide additional support services to ensure that they are successful. The ultimate goal of the Indian Education Act is to promote educational opportunities for Native American students and to close the achievement gap between Native American students and their peers. The law recognizes that many Native American youth face unique challenges when it comes to education and provides additional resources to help them succeed.
