What is the Indian Claims Commission?

The Indian Claims Commission (ICC) is a special court formed by the United States Congress to address legal disputes that involve Native American tribes in South Carolina. This court was established in 1946 as part of the Indian Claims Act. The ICC was set up to address legal conflicts between Native American tribes and the U.S. government, such as land disputes, claims of unfair treatment, and violations of treaties. The ICC is composed of three members appointed by the President of the United States. These three members are tasked with the responsibility of hearing and deciding cases that involve Native American tribes in South Carolina. They are given the authority to issue binding decisions on the matters brought forth before the court. The ICC also has the authority to review past wrongs and wrongdoings by the federal government towards Native Americans. In addition, the ICC is responsible for determining the validity of claims and compensations that the Native American tribes have made against the U.S. government. The ICC is also responsible for making recommendations on how to best resolve disputes that have been brought before them. All decisions made by the ICC are final and binding on the parties involved. The Indian Claims Commission was established to provide a forum for Native American tribes in South Carolina to pursue the justice they deserve. This special court allows Native American tribes to seek compensation for wrongs done to them by the U.S. government. Ultimately, the ICC works to ensure that fair and just decisions are issued on all matters involving Native American tribes in South Carolina.
