What is nursing home abuse?

Nursing home abuse is a form of elder abuse that refers to any behavior that causes physical, emotional, or financial harm to an elderly resident in a nursing home. In Texas, nursing home abuse laws are designed to protect the elderly from nursing home neglect, exploitation, or abuse. Nursing home abuse can take many forms, including physical abuse, such as hitting, pushing, or restraining residents; emotional abuse, such as threats, intimidation, or humiliation; financial exploitation, such as fraudulently taking a resident’s money or property; and neglect, such as not providing appropriate medical care. Additionally, nursing home abuse can include not providing adequate nutrition or sanitation, or failing to properly monitor a resident’s health and safety. Nursing home abuse is a serious crime and is punishable under Texas law. The penalties for nursing home abuse can include a fine, time in jail, or both. Additionally, many states have a civil remedy, which allows victims to sue the abuser for damages. It is important for anyone who suspects that a nursing home resident is being abused to report it to the proper authorities immediately.
