How do I report suspected nursing home abuse?
If you suspect that a nursing home resident in Florida is being abused, it is important to report it right away. In Florida, suspected cases of nursing home abuse must be reported to the Florida Department of Health’s Abuse Hotline. The Abuse Hotline provides a toll-free number for individuals to report suspected abuse, neglect and/or exploitation of vulnerable individuals in Florida’s nursing homes. In addition, Florida law requires any person having reasonable cause to suspect that a vulnerable adult has been, or is being abused, abandoned, neglected, or exploited to report such instances to the local law enforcement agency, the local social services department, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCF) or the Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA). When you make a report, it is important to provide as much information as possible, such as the date and time of the incident, the name of the victim, the name of the perpetrator, and any witnesses to the incident. When making a report to the Florida Department of Health, you also need to provide a detailed description of the incident. This should include the type of abuse that you suspect, the location where the abuse occurred, and the names of any witnesses that you may have. The report should also include the age, physical condition, and other pertinent information about the victim. It is important to remember that all reports of suspected abuse are confidential and all reports are taken seriously. By reporting suspected abuse, you can help ensure that nursing home residents in Florida receive the care and protection they need and deserve.
