What type of training do nursing home staff receive?

In California, nursing home staff must receive training in accordance to the regulations provided by the Department of Social Services. This includes training in state and federal regulations, infection control, individual rights, physical and functional needs, communication and behavior, nutrition, wound care and end-of-life care. Other training focuses on prevention of abuse, including understanding of laws and regulations, identifying signs of abuse, methods to prevent abuse, techniques to raise awareness of abuse, reporting abuse or suspected abuse, and how to respond in the face of abuse. Additional training may include understanding of psychoactive medication, emergency response, dementia care, and caring for residents with physical or psychological disabilities. All staff must also receive initial training within 14 days of employment. Additionally, all nursing home staff must complete initial and ongoing training for regulatory compliance, including training about preventing and responding to abuse and neglect. Staff must be given the opportunity to update their training on an annual basis. This training must also include information on how to recognize and report signs of abuse, and how to be sensitive to culture and language issues. Finally, each nursing home must ensure that staff are provided with training and are properly certified to administer medications. Additionally, staff must be trained on the use of assistive devices and transferring residents from wheelchairs. All trained staff must have documentation of their records kept in the facility.
