What is the difference between a nursing home and an assisted living facility?

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are both residential care facilities, but there are some key differences. Nursing homes are designed for individuals who require more medical attention, such as seniors who cannot take care of themselves due to physical or mental handicaps. They provide day-to-day medical care, including medication management, assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and toileting, as well as round-the-clock monitoring and supervision. Assisted living facilities provide more of a home-like environment for seniors who are mostly independent, but need some help with daily activities and amenities. Assisted living facilities provide access to meals, housekeeping, medication management, and personal care services such as bathing and dressing. They also provide recreational programs or social activities, such as outings or lectures. In Minnesota, both of these types of facilities are regulated by the Minnesota Department of Health. They are responsible for ensuring residents receive the necessary care and protection from abuse in these facilities. Nursing home residents are also protected by the Minnesota Nursing Home Abuse Law, which covers any incidents of abuse, neglect, or exploitation that occur in nursing homes.
