What is the difference between intentional and unintentional abuse in a nursing home?
Intentional abuse and unintentional abuse are two different types of abuse that can occur in a nursing home in South Carolina. Intentional abuse is defined as any action taken by a staff member, such as physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse, with the intention of harming or exploiting the resident. Intentional abuse can be committed by nursing home staff, visitors, or even other residents. Unintentional abuse, on the other hand, occurs when abuse is not intentional but can still be harmful. Examples of unintentional abuse include neglect by staff members, improper use of restraints, or failure to provide proper medical care. Unlike intentional abuse, unintentional abuse is often more difficult to identify and document. It is important for nursing home staff to be aware of the signs of abuse, as well as the protocols and procedures in place to address and prevent it. As with intentional abuse, victims of unintentional abuse can report the incident to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The state also has a criminal justice system in place to prosecute those who are guilty of intentionally abusing vulnerable citizens.
