What is the difference between conventional and non-conventional oil and gas production?

Conventional oil and gas production is the extraction of naturally occurring hydrocarbon reserves from underground reservoirs through wells. This is the traditional method of extracting oil and gas and is generally the most common method of production used in West Virginia. Non-conventional oil and gas production includes a range of techniques such as horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and enhanced oil recovery. These methods allow for access to hydrocarbons that are more difficult to access through conventional techniques. In West Virginia, this is used to harvest natural gas from the Marcellus Shale. Horizontal drilling is when a well is drilled at an angle in order to access a larger area of the oil or gas field. Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as “fracking”, is when a well is injected with a mixture of water, sand and chemicals in order to fracture the rock and release the hydrocarbons. Enhanced oil recovery is when a third party is brought in to inject water or gas into a reservoir in order to increase the amount of oil that can be extracted from the reservoir. In conclusion, conventional oil and gas production is the extraction of naturally occurring hydrocarbon reserves through wells. Non-conventional oil and gas production uses advanced techniques such as horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and enhanced oil recovery to access hydrocarbons that are more difficult to access through conventional methods.
